Interjecting Infidelity

September 13, 2011

It's funny how at about 11 o'clock basic cable ads suddenly turn into ads for extremely beautiful, but sadly lonely women who are looking to talk to me. Yes, me! And anyone else with a valid credit card…

A couple years ago an ad showed up for a website specifically geared for cheating on your spouse. Yep, $249 guarantees you will have an affair in 90 days your money refunded. I'd hate to be the guy who A) is so desperate he uses this site to cheat on his wife and B) gets a refund.

Anyhow, as unsurprising as the content of late night TV ads may be, what is surprising to me was the tune they used. Here, play this little video and see if you can identify the jingle.

You may have to be over, um, 35? Heck, I don't know when they stopped running School House Rock, but I do know that I haven't been able to get their little ditties out of my head since I was a kid. And so I drink… but that's another story.

This doesn't even try to disguise the fact that it's School House Rock's Interjections! educational jingle.

Now, morality of advertising a tool to be a tool aside, there's the obvious, 'Doesn't someone own the copyright?' The lack of information online about a potential copyright infringement lawsuit and the fact the video is on Youtube unchallenged by the moral outrage of the morally outraged makes me think that there isn't a copyright issue -- that is, I have a suspicion School House Rock actually licensed the tune to Ashley Madison.

The folks who are selling DVDs of the original cartoons and alternative rock covers have this dying brand franchise with cartoons that are the stuff of nostalgia for folks in their 30s and 40s… Add a little spice, and Infidelity becomes an Interjection that School House Rock can make a bit of money.

So while the brand may not have been stolen, another little piece of my innocence was. Well, would have stolen a piece of my innocence if we hadn't already come up with WAY worse parodies when we were kids.
